We erect memorial crosses in the public area outside the abortion center as women exit after abortions. Each cross memorializes an actual child who died. Our crosses are taken down at the end of each week.
Even though the Bakersfield City sign ordinance specifically exempts memorials, City officials have illegally confiscated crosses from us and have stated their intentions to continue to do so.
Code enforcement officers state that memorials are only allowed for a limited amount of time.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the community, memorial crosses erected in the public areas near streets are allowed to remain for months.
