Position Statement - The 40 Days for Life Campaign does not support abortion under any circumstances, including rape and incest. From the moment of conception to natural death, the human being is at all times a human person. Personhood is not derived from man-made law and cannot be awarded, diminished, or withdrawn from any human being by Act of Parliament or by any judicial action. This right to life is the pre-eminent right upon which all other rights depend. It must be defended with our utmost effort.
Statement of Peace - If you do not agree with this Statement, you are not welcome to participate.
Upon Arrival - The Vigil Campaign is meant to be a time of intense prayer and solemnity. When you arrive in front of the Women’s Hospital, please introduce yourself to fellow participants, and immediately begin your witness. We are there to pray and sacrifice, not to engage in idle talk.
Prayer Zone - Participants are asked to walk on the sidewalk in front of the Women’s Hospital, Notre Dame Avenue. The place to walk is on the sidewalk between the entry and exit. Avoid blocking the entry and exit ways to the hospital. Avoid parking or walking on the hospital’s private property, as you could be charged with trespassing. When sidewalk counsellors engage pregnant women or their entourage, please do not stare or gawk. Instead, keep your head down and pray hard.
Engagement - If a member of the public wants to engage you on the issue of abortion, move away from the "prayer zone" so as to not disturb the other participants. You are not required to engage anyone, but if you choose to, please do so calmly, in a peaceful manner. Do not raise your voice or become angry. Simply state your views calmly, rationally, and with Christian charity. If the person engaging you becomes hostile, simply walk away
Pray Quietly - The 40 Days for Life Vigil Campaign is meant to be a time of silent prayer. However, if you want to pray audibly, please move some distance away to respect those who wish to pray in silence.
Depository - There will be a plastic storage bin with the official 40 Days for Life Prayer Booklet, a registration binder, log book, pro-life resources, and other material. The signs and storage bin will be brought to the “Prayer Zone” at 8:00AM and picked up at 8:00PM. Please sign your name in the registration binder when you arrive. The log book is to be used to document anything the participants deem notable, both positive (a baby saved by the presence of the vigil participants) and negative (threatening behavior by members of the public or harassment by hospital security, etc).
If you are approached by a pregnant woman seeking help, please call 452-2459, and remain with the woman until someone arrives to pick her up.
Campaign Vigil Relief Phone Number - Participants are encouraged to bring their cellular phones with them to report emergencies. If you do not have one, there is a MTS payphone nearby. Please be sure to have 50 cents available to make a phone call, if necessary. In the event that the next participant has not arrived by the time your shift has ended, you are asked to phone 452-2459.
Participants are asked to arrive 10 minutes early in order to ensure a continues presence in front of the hospital as well as allowing enough time to register their name in the registration binder, retrieve a sign from the bin and familiarize themselves with the pro-life resources contained in it.
