Abortion involves the intentional ending of an innocent human life. Like other injustices, it causes harm to all involved - to women, to medical staff, and of course to unborn babies.
The scale of this injustice is difficult to comprehend. According to the most recent official data from the DoHC (released Jan 2026) abortions in England and Wales have reached record levels (2023: 277,970). Globally, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are around 73 million induced abortions every year.
In the face of an injustice on this scale, it is tempting to feel that we are powerless to change things. And it's true that we can’t end this injustice by ourselves. But God can!

The 2026 campaign of prayer and fasting to end abortion in our community begins on Ash Wednesday. For 40 days during Lent, we’ll be praying for up to 12 hours a day. As we pray, we offer genuine practical help to women facing crisis pregnancies who may otherwise feel they have no choice. We also engage with members of the public if they ask why we believe abortion is wrong. Everything we do is COMPASSIONATE, PEACEFUL and LEGAL.
If you would like to join our vigil, sign up on our website to create a login, then choose your prayer times, depending on your circumstances. That may be one hour during Lent, an hour each week, or even an hour a day. Throughout the campaign, we’ll send inspiring stories from others praying for the same cause in communities all over the world.
During our vigil we will be standing outside the censorship zone imposed by the Public Order Act, on the Nottingham Road, at the junction with Pinfold Lane (on the opposite side of the road from the Wesley Chapel). Look out for the Stapleford Town Council noticeboard.
